Spain's NEOS urges review of euthanasia law after Noelia Castillo case
On Monday in Madrid, the NEOS foundation and the Assembly of Associations for Life, Freedom and Dignity organized the event “Help to live, not to die – The Noelia case and the culture of death.” The gathering, attended by bio‑ethics, medical and legal experts and family testimonies, focused on the recent euthanasia of 25‑year‑old Noelia Castillo under Spain’s 2021 law.
NEOS vice‑president María San Gil and other speakers argued that the law risks normalising death as a solution to suffering and called for a thorough review of the legislation, greater transparency, and an independent investigation of the Noelia case. They also demanded the passage of a national palliative‑care act to ensure dignified care for vulnerable patients, emphasizing that genuine freedom requires real alternatives to euthanasia.
The organizers will submit a manifesto to the Ombudsman and parliamentary groups, seeking institutional accountability and the strengthening of social, psychological and medical support for those in pain or disability.
