Spain's opposition parties demand early elections over corruption allegations

In the Congress of Deputies a motion was approved urging Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to submit to a confidence vote and assume political responsibility for pending corruption investigations involving members of his party and cabinet. The motion was backed by the People’s Party (PP), Vox, Junts and Navarre’s UPN, while the Canarian Coalition did not support it.

In the Senate, the PP and Vox alone succeeded in demanding that Sánchez call snap elections. The Senate passed the request with the PP’s absolute majority and Vox’s votes; Junts and other regional parties abstained. Opposition leaders accused Sánchez of corruption involving his wife and brother and called for an early election, whereas the governing PSOE and its allies rejected the demand.
