Spain's Palma-Mallorca Airport Officially Renamed
The Spanish Ministry of Transport and Mobility has issued a ministerial order to change the official name of the island’s main airport from "Aeropuerto de Palma de Mallorca" to "Aeropuerto de Palma-Mallorca". The new designation reflects the city’s official name, Palma, while retaining the island reference with a hyphen, in line with ICAO recommendations.
The change must be published in the official gazette, and interested parties may submit comments until 15 September. While cultural groups such as Obra Cultural Balear and Fem‑ho en Català welcomed the adjustment, the Assemblea Sobiranista de Mallorca (ASM) announced it will continue its administrative‑legal challenge, arguing that the Spanish‑language term "Aeropuerto" still does not meet its demand for the Catalan form "Aeroport".
The renaming aims to resolve a long‑standing toponymic inconsistency and aligns the airport’s name with the official Catalan toponymy of the Balearic Islands.
