Spain's People's Party elects new Catalan leader and courts Junts for opposition pact

The People's Party of Catalonia (PPC) held its 16th Congress, re‑electing Alejandro Fernández as party president with 97.51% of the vote. Fernández unveiled a reorganised executive bureau, naming Juan Fernández as secretary‑general, Lorena Roldán as deputy secretary‑general, and assigning key posts to figures such as Juan Milián (strategic coordination), David Solé (territorial policy), Alfredo Bergua (organisation), Eli Ortega (sectorial affairs), Estrella Salanova (social and family policy), Raúl Collbatallé (municipal policy), Hugo Manchón (communication), Natalia Ortega (economy and housing), Eva Guillén (finance), Toni Molina (institutional relations), Fernando Sánchez‑Costa (studies and programmes) and Paris Grau (education, culture and sport). Additional members of the party’s directing committee were also listed.

At the national level, People's Party leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo has intensified outreach to the pro‑independence Junts per Catalunya, seeking to construct an alternative parliamentary majority that would exclude Vox. Feijóo’s shift from earlier rhetoric that labelled the Catalan separatist movement a “coup” aims to facilitate a potential motion of no confidence against the governing PSOE. Vox has condemned the overtures as a betrayal of right‑wing voters, warning that any alliance with Junts would undermine Spanish unity. The emerging negotiations could reshape parliamentary dynamics ahead of upcoming elections.
