Spain's People's Party vows to repeal Democratic Memory Law, targeting Bildu influence

Spain’s centre‑right People's Party (PP) announced it will repeal the Democratic Memory Law in a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Alberto Núñez Feijóo. The pledge was made by PP secretary‑general Miguel Tellado during an event in Madrid marking the 29th anniversary of the murder of Miguel Ángel Blanco by ETA.

Tellado said the move aims to prevent the “narrative” on ETA terrorism from being shaped by the pro‑Basque party Bildu. He also outlined additional measures: strengthening teaching of ETA’s history and its victims in schools, barring non‑repentant convicted terrorists from appearing on electoral lists, tightening prison‑policy to stop benefits for such prisoners, and prohibiting public tributes to ETA members.

The PP accused the governing PSOE of “white‑washing” terrorist heirs through its pacts with Bildu and framed the repeal as a defence of democratic memory and victims’ rights.
