Spain's PM Pedro Sánchez under fire over wife's corruption trial

The Spanish government has criticised judge Juan Carlos Peinado after he ordered Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s wife, Begoña Gómez, to stand trial for alleged influence‑peddling, embezzlement and other corruption linked to her university work and ordered her to surrender her passport. Justice Minister Félix Bolaños said Peinado’s rulings were “incomprehensible” and “contrary to the law”. Sánchez rejected the accusations and described the travel ban as “beyond the bounds of reason”.

The case adds to a string of recent scandals affecting Sánchez’s Socialist Party. Former transport minister José Luis Ábalos was sentenced to 24 years in prison for taking bribes and fraud in COVID‑19 mask contracts, and former prime minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero is also under investigation for alleged corruption. Opposition parties have intensified pressure on the minority coalition government.
