Spain's PM wife Begona Gomez barred from travel amid corruption probe

A Spanish court has imposed a travel ban on Begona Gomez, the wife of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, and ordered her to surrender her passport. The judge, Juan Carlos Peinado, also requires her to appear in court twice a month until a final decision is made.

The investigation, launched in April 2024 by an anti‑corruption watchdog, accuses Gomez of embezzlement, influence‑peddling and misuse of public resources linked to a special post at the Complutense University of Madrid. Both Gomez and Sánchez have denied the allegations. Opposition parties have called for the prime minister’s resignation and early elections, while other members of the Sánchez family are also under separate corruption inquiries.

The case adds pressure on the Spanish government, which has rejected calls for a resignation, and highlights ongoing concerns over alleged misuse of political influence.
