Spain's political turmoil grows as SEPI probe and left coalition talks unfold

Spain's government faces renewed scrutiny as the judge overseeing the "case Leire" brought charges against the president of the state-owned SEPI and expanded investigations to include the director general of the Guardia Civil and a senior operational deputy. The inquiries allege continuous prevarication and offenses against the administration of justice, prompting criticism that President Pedro Sánchez continues to support officials under criminal investigation.

At the same time, the federal coordinator of Izquierda Unida, Antonio Maíllo, urged the broader left to promptly select a candidate and an electoral brand for the 2027 general elections. He called for a democratic deepening, consolidation of social rights, and the creation of a durable, transformative left front that goes beyond short‑term alliances such as the so‑called "Rufián way." Maíllo emphasized the need to integrate parties like Comuns, Más Madrid and Sumar under a new, recognizable name to counter the rise of the right‑wing bloc.
