Spain's Pedro Sánchez signals possible 2027 election if 2027 budget is rejected

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez reiterated that the Spanish government will present the state budget for 2026 and hold the next general election in 2027, stating the election will not coincide with the municipal and regional elections in May. He added that, should the 2027 General State Budget be rejected by the Congress, the government could dissolve the Cortes and call an early election that year. He said, “Si se tienen que tomar decisiones, las tomaremos cuando se produzcan estas hipótesis.”

The budget presentation and the accompanying macro‑economic forecast have been postponed to 29 June, together with a decree‑law of anti‑crisis measures linked to the war in Iran. Sánchez stressed the need to secure parliamentary backing from coalition partners such as the Basque PNV, warning that failure to pass the budget would trigger the “technical” advance of the elections.

Opposition parties, especially the PP, claim a majority in the Congress and have demanded a confidence motion and immediate elections, accusing Sánchez’s government of corruption and describing the legislature as “finished”. The PP’s secretary‑general Miguel Tellado warned that “a Sánchez and his band have very little time left to keep stealing.” The political stalemate heightens the risk of a premature electoral showdown.
