Alicante education budget cuts spark PSOE outrage

The socialist municipal group in Alicante denounced an 80% reduction in funding for educational infrastructure. The party blames regional president Juanfran Pérez Llorca and city mayor Luis Barcala, saying the latest budget cuts the amount allocated for 2026 from the promised €54.5 million to just €12.5 million, with most of the money directed to completing a single school, CEIP La Almadraba.

PSOE spokesperson Ana Barceló highlighted several projects hit by the cuts, including the Conservatory of Music José Tomás (down from €3.72 million to €100 000), institutes Jaume I, San Blas, Virgen del Remedio and Las Lomas (budget reduced from €18.2 million to €1.1 million), and the heavily over‑crowded IES Cap de l’Horta (funded down to €10 000). She called for an immediate amendment to the regional accounts to recover the committed investments and urged the mayor to demand a correction from the Valencian government.
