Spain's PSOE embroiled in Leire scandal as Montero decries betrayal

Spain's finance minister and PSOE member María Jesús Montero condemned the “Leire case,” saying it provoked her indignation and accused party figure Vicente Fernández of abusing trust. She described the situation as a betrayal of the party’s principles and highlighted the recent conviction of the president’s brother for prevarication, calling the sentence unjust.

Montero noted that several senior party officials, including a former secretary of organization and the director of the Civil Guard, are under investigation, and stressed the need for full cooperation with the judiciary, emphasizing the party’s internal effort to gather documents and provide evidence.

She warned that such conduct harms the PSOE’s reputation and undermines public confidence in democratic institutions.
