Spain's PSOE entangled in multiple corruption investigations

Spain's governing socialist party (PSOE) is facing a wave of corruption probes. The Civil Guard's Central Operative Unit (UCO) revealed that a luxury car financed by the company Servinabar was used by former party organisation chief Santos Cerdán and ex‑advisor Koldo García to travel to parliamentary sessions. Investigators say the vehicle's fees were paid by Joseba Antxon Alonso, a business partner of Cerdán, as part of alleged benefits for steering public‑works contracts.

Other high‑profile cases surround the party. Former transport minister José Luis Ábalos has been sentenced for corruption. Leire Díez‑Santos Cerdán remains under investigation, and former prime minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero is being examined for his role in the Plus Ultra airline bailout. The wife of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Begoña Gómez, is also heading to trial. In addition, Plus Ultra Líneas Aéreas' president and CEO resigned while investigators look into the airline's pandemic‑era state loan.

These overlapping scandals are intensifying political pressure on the Sánchez government and prompting calls for early elections.
