Spain's PSOE faces crisis as Victor Aldama cooperates with justice

Former high‑ranking official Victor Aldama has reached a cooperation agreement with Spain’s justice system, securing a significantly reduced sentence and a hefty fine. The deal follows Supreme Court rulings that imposed severe penalties on José Luis Ábalos and Koldo García for corruption, while granting Aldama leniency.

The move has triggered speculation that other individuals linked to the PSOE‑government network—such as Leire Díez, lawyer Julio Martínez, Santos Cerdán and former ministers—may also seek collaboration with investigators. Reports suggest Martínez has hired ex‑prosecutor María Dolores Márquez de Prado, known for negotiating favorable agreements, further fueling expectations of additional disclosures.

Within the party, the cooperation is sowing distrust and threatening the cohesion of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s administration. Senior figures warn that renewed testimonies could expose extensive illicit dealings, potentially destabilising the government and intensifying public scrutiny of the PSOE’s corruption scandals.
