Juan Manuel Serrano imputed in Leire Díez corruption probe over Correos appointment

Judge Santiago Pedraz of the Audiencia Nacional has formally imputed Juan Manuel Serrano, former chief of staff to Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and ex‑president of Correos, for a “pre‑eminent participation” in the corruption network surrounding the appointment of former PSOE activist Leire Díez to a senior position at the state postal service.

The Central Operative Unit (UCO) of the Guardia Civil supplied the court with messages showing Serrano coordinating with SEPI president Vicente Fernández and with Díez to bypass the normal recruitment process, and indicating that the hiring was part of a broader scheme to divert public‑contract funds and to obstruct investigations into the PSOE. The judge ordered the seizure and forensic analysis of Serrano’s mobile phone and authorized similar scrutiny of other party officials.

The case, which also implicates other PSOE figures and SEPI contracts, has intensified opposition pressure on Sánchez’s government, with the Popular Party demanding early elections and the anti‑corruption prosecutor seeking Serrano’s formal indictment. The investigation remains open and is expected to generate further parliamentary and legal scrutiny.
