Spain's public health system under strain over emergency misuse and robot surgery equity

Surgeon Diego Rivas warned that the free nature of Spain's emergency services encourages inappropriate use, stating, "It's free and people abuse it." He explained that many patients attend emergency departments for minor ailments that could be managed in primary care, increasing waiting times and burdening staff.

In Galicia, the regional health authority Sergas ordered Hospital Ribera Povisa to provide Da Vinci robotic surgery to its 102,000 public patients, not just private ones. The directive emphasized equal clinical criteria for all and highlighted that only a handful of public patients had previously accessed the robot, compared with hundreds of procedures for private cases. Sergas cited equity and compliance with existing contracts as reasons for the mandate.
