Spain's regions call for stronger climate risk prevention and dam water safety

The Canary Islands government, represented by the Minister of Ecological Transition and Energy Mariano Hernández Zapata, urged the Spanish State to open real negotiations for a National Agreement on Prevention, Coordination and Response to Natural Risks. The declaration stresses the need for an integrated strategy that combines mitigation, adaptation, forest management, civil protection and water planning, and criticises the lack of response to concrete proposals from the autonomous communities.

In Huelva, sub‑delegate of the Government María José Rico expressed confidence that the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Andalusian Junta will resume talks on the Alcolea dam project. She highlighted the necessity to first determine who will treat the toxic water from the dam before proceeding with the associated San Silvestre tunnel works, noting the project's high economic cost and its importance for the province.

Both statements reflect a broader push by Spanish regional authorities for clearer responsibility and stronger measures in managing climate‑related risks and water safety.
