Spain’s Renewable Expansion Cuts Household Power Bills Amid Iran Conflict

Spain’s rapid build‑out of wind, solar and hydro power now supplies about 56% of its electricity, with more than 40 GW of new capacity added since 2019. The growth has slashed the role of natural‑gas‑fired generation to roughly 9% of the time in 2026, down from 52% in 2021, and reduced wholesale power prices to €42 /MWh, far lower than Italy’s €143 /MWh.

Because of the lower gas exposure, households have saved roughly €10 a month on electricity bills since March 2026, when the Iran‑related closure of the Strait of Hormuz disrupted European energy markets. Temporary tax cuts have further trimmed about €8 from monthly bills. Spain continues to improve grid resilience with easier battery‑storage integration and monthly additions of about 1.3 GW of wind and solar.
