Spain's renewables cut household electricity bills by €10 a month

A report by the British consultancy Ember finds that the rapid expansion of wind and solar power in Spain has dramatically reduced the role of gas in setting electricity prices. Between 2021 and 2025, renewable generation grew 37%, lowering the share of hours where gas determined the marginal price from 52% to just 9% by early 2026. This shift saved Spanish households an average of €10 (about $11.5) per month on their electricity bills and kept wholesale prices around €42/MWh, far below Italy's €143/MWh.

The analysis also notes that after the Iberian blackout in April 2025, Spain accelerated renewable and storage deployment, adding about 1.3 GW of wind‑solar capacity each month from May 2025 to February 2026. Large‑scale battery storage capacity quadrupled in 2025 and is expected to do so again in 2026, supported by regulatory reforms that allow renewables to provide grid‑stability services.
