Spain's road tunnels face traffic jams and lighting upgrades
Drivers on the A‑64 highway to Villaviciosa in Asturias experienced 15‑20 minute delays as construction work in the Fabares‑La Lloba tunnel and problematic junctions with the N‑632 road created severe congestion. Mayor Alejandro Vega warned that the situation was unsustainable during the summer beach‑going season and called on regional authorities for urgent measures.
Separately, the A‑5 tunnel at Miravete in Cáceres completed a €2.4 million modernization funded by EU recovery resources. The project replaced high‑pressure sodium lamps with an LED system that can be remotely adjusted, installed 825 new luminaires, added cameras for license‑plate detection, and upgraded electrical circuits, aiming to boost road safety and reduce energy consumption.
