Spain's Rural Night Skies Turn Blue with New LED Lighting

New LED streetlights installed across rural Spain have altered the colour of night illumination, producing a white‑blue glow that contrasts with the yellow‑red hue still seen over Spanish cities. Images from the Chinese SDTSAT‑1 satellite captured the shift in early July.

Researchers at Complutense University produced a light‑pollution map for the EU RALAN‑Map project, working with the International Research Center of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals. The map shows that the brighter white light spreads more intensely than the previous reddish tones, potentially increasing overall light pollution and affecting the biological cycles of local fauna and flora. While the LEDs are intended to save energy, the findings suggest possible ecological side effects.
