European municipal LED street lighting rollout

In mid‑2026 French communes began replacing legacy sodium‑vapor lamps with LED fixtures. Val‑au‑Perche will convert 200 streetlights by the end of 2027, funded largely by the national Green Fund, while Hasparren upgraded its town hall lighting through a regional energy syndicate scheme. Both projects target 60‑70 % reductions in electricity use and significant annual cost savings.

At the same time, municipalities across Spain are undertaking a similar transition. Satellite imagery showed a noticeable shift toward white LED illumination, even in towns under 5,000 residents. Zaragoza’s "Reluzes" programme has installed LEDs in over three‑quarters of its planned replacements, projecting a 70 % cut in power consumption and lower CO₂ emissions, with a second phase funded by €9.96 million to extend the upgrade.

Together, these parallel efforts illustrate a broader European push to modernise public lighting, driven by energy‑efficiency goals, emission reductions and operational cost savings, while also raising concerns about increased blue‑rich light and its impact on sky glow.
