Spain unveils State Fertilizer Plan to support farmers by 2027

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced a State Fertilizer Plan aimed at reducing Spain’s dependence on imported fertilizers and improving food security. The plan, to be ready in the first quarter of 2027, includes a first list of 425,000 beneficiaries and more than €600 million in direct aid for fertilizer purchases, bringing total primary‑sector support to over €1.1 billion. Funding was expanded by €165 million following the government’s response to the Middle‑East conflict and the temporary closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which disrupted global fertilizer supplies.

The programme also maintains existing measures such as a €0.20‑per‑liter discount on agricultural diesel, doubled per‑hectare subsidies, and a €300 million credit line (ICO‑MAPA‑SAECA). It emphasises precision agriculture, strategic autonomy and market transparency, with a three‑axis action plan and a forthcoming dialogue with regional administrations and stakeholders. The Union of Unions of Farmers and Ranchers welcomed the initiative, calling it a positive step while noting persistently high fertilizer prices and tariff challenges.
