Spain-Portugal fertilizer and crop aid programs
Entities: Luis Planas · UPA · ASAJA · Sara Aagesen · Hugo Morán
Overview
In early July 2026 Spain launched a State Fertilizer Plan that will run through 2027, allocating €665 million to more than 424,000 farmers and livestock owners, with applications due by 27 July. Technical glitches on the FEGA platform prompted farmer groups to seek an extension. Portugal introduced a €20 million non‑reimbursable scheme for roughly 19,900 beneficiaries, covering animal and land‑based farms and a diesel subsidy, with payouts scheduled by 31 July.
At the end of July, the Spanish government announced a provisional resolution for the Doñana crop‑abandonment aid program. The first round, funded with €28.5 million, will support over 500 applications covering more than 1,000 hectares of voluntary crop abandonment to relieve pressure on the Doñana aquifer. Rollout has been delayed by procedural complications and slow document transmission from the Junta de Andalucía and local municipalities, especially in Lucena del Puerto, Huelva. Officials expect a second list of beneficiaries in September or October and a third round later in the year.
