Spain's Sánchez urged to resign or call elections amid coalition push

Junts spokesperson Miriam Nogueras addressed Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez in the Congress, urging him to step aside and allow the investiture bloc – comprising PSOE, Sumar, ERC, Junts, EH Bildu, PNV, Podemos, BNG and Coalición Canaria – to select a new head of government. The move is presented as a way to finish the legislative term and avoid a snap election that could increase the far‑right’s parliamentary weight.

Former prime minister Felipe González also publicly called on Sánchez to either resign or dissolve parliament and call elections. Sánchez rejected opposition accusations and defended his administration, while party allies such as the PNV reiterated concerns about the government’s legitimacy to continue the legislature.

The pressure reflects growing tensions within the governing coalition and among regional parties, raising the prospect of an early election that could reshape Spain’s political landscape.
