Spain's Social Security faces repayment demand and record pension payouts

The Spanish Social Security is pursuing a repayment claim of up to €42,000 against a mother of two who received the Ingreso Mínimo Vital (IMV) between 2020 and 2025. The woman, who also collected the previous renta mínima de inserción, says she was not warned of any error and has begun legal proceedings to challenge the demand.

In June 2026, Spain’s Social Security disbursed a record €28.432 billion to over 10.4 million pension recipients, including the regular monthly pension and an extraordinary summer payment. The average monthly retirement pension rose to €1,572.8, a 4.4% yearly increase, while the extra summer payment averaged €1,550.8. More than 1.5 million pensions included a gender‑gap complement, benefiting primarily women.
