Spain's Socialist Party Accused of Capturing State Institutions

Two opinion pieces allege that the ruling Spanish Socialist Party has systematically placed loyalists in senior positions across the judiciary, the army and security forces, effectively undermining the independence of state institutions. The authors argue that this process is rooted in three factors: initial flaws in the democratic system that allowed the party to colonise public bodies; a historically sectarian, anti‑democratic party culture dating back to its Marxist origins; and the criminal backgrounds of many senior party figures, which they describe as a mafia‑like network. The commentary also criticises the erosion of judicial guarantees, comparing the current situation to the legacy of the Franco regime and calling for a review of constitutional safeguards.

The pieces portray a picture of pervasive corruption and institutional decay, suggesting that the party's control threatens the rule of law and democratic norms in Spain.
