Spain's Tax Agency Refunds Record €9.36 bn, Adds Interest for Late Payments
The Spanish Agencia Tributaria reported that, by early July, it had returned €9.362 billion to 12.95 million taxpayers who requested refunds in the 2025 income‑tax filing season. The agency processed 25.6 million returns, 16.4 million of which sought a refund, amounting to a total of €14.089 billion. About 79 % of refund claims were addressed and 66 % of the owed amounts had been paid.
Under Spanish law the tax administration must complete refunds within six months of filing. If the deadline is exceeded for reasons attributable to the agency, it must automatically add interest of 4.0625 % per annum to the overdue amount. For the 2025 campaign, which ends on 30 June 2026, the final deadline for any refund is 31 December 2026. Taxpayers need not file a claim to receive the interest; it is applied automatically when the legal limit is breached.
