Spain IRPF filing, refunds & errors – July 2026
Entities: Said · Andrés Millán · Agencia Tributaria · Laborai
Overview
The Agencia Tributaria kept the 30 June 2026 deadline for filing the 2025‑2026 IRPF return, with a 25 June cut‑off for automatic bank‑direct‑debit setups. Taxpayers were urged to verify the pre‑filled draft and confirm all income, deductions and credits. New deductions cover health, mental‑health, sport and cultural activities (up to €60 000 individual / €78 000 joint) and a credit for musical training; Madrid renters under 40 can claim up to €1 237,20. A little‑known deduction of up to €340 is available for workers earning €16 576 or less, tapering off until €18 276 and applicable only to employment income.
A review by the Laborai platform found that seven out of ten IRPF returns contain mistakes or omitted deductions, often leading to an overpayment of €600‑€800 per taxpayer. The analysis highlighted that many low‑income workers miss the €340 deduction, underscoring the agency’s warning to review the pre‑filled draft carefully.
Filing has been possible online since 8 April via Renta WEB, the agency’s app, a small‑municipality support scheme and a postcode‑filtered appointment scheduler. The agency expects to collect €24.628 billion (up 18.4 %) and refund €13.271 billion (down 3.2 %). By early July it had returned €9.362 billion to 12.95 million taxpayers, processing 79 % of refund claims and paying 66 % of the amounts owed. Late filings incur 1 % interest per month (capped at 15 % after 12 months) and fines of €100–€200; refunds must be completed within six months, with automatic interest of 4.0625 % p.a. if delayed.
