Spain’s towns and cities adopt white LED streetlights

A Chinese satellite (SDGSAT‑1) captured a shift in the night‑time colour of many Spanish municipalities as they replace yellow sodium‑vapor lamps with white LED fixtures. The change, documented in the high‑resolution RALAN‑Map EU, shows that even small towns of fewer than 5,000 residents now emit a bluer light, which is more visible from orbit. While LEDs cut electricity use, the higher blue component can increase sky glow.

In Zaragoza, the municipal "Reluzes" programme has installed LED technology in 7,408 of the 9,630 streetlights slated for replacement, reaching 76.9% completion. The city expects a 70% reduction in electricity consumption and lower CO₂ emissions. A second phase, "ReluzYDos," funded with €9.96 million, will upgrade an additional 8,999 luminaires and 72 control cabinets.

Overall, the nationwide modernization aims to lower municipal energy costs and maintenance while reshaping Spain’s nocturnal landscape.
