Spain's traffic authority imposes fines for unsecured vehicle loads

The Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) warns that transporting cargo that is not properly secured or exceeds legal limits can result in severe penalties. Drivers may face fines of up to €500 and the loss of four driving‑license points. An additional €200 fine applies to loads that are poorly fastened, and vehicles can be immobilised.

Under the General Traffic Regulations, cargo must not protrude laterally from passenger cars. At the rear, an excess of up to 10 % of the vehicle’s length is allowed only for divisible items (e.g., suitcases), and up to 15 % for indivisible objects such as bicycles or surfboards. When load extends beyond these limits a reflective V‑20 plate must be displayed; failure to do so is also punishable.

The DGT advises motorists to place heavier items low in the trunk, secure them against the seat‑back, avoid using the rear tray as storage, and to check the ties a few kilometres after starting a journey. The Guardia Civil will intensify monitoring of these violations during the summer travel period.
