Spain's water reservoirs at 82.4% capacity amid ongoing drought

The Ministry for the Ecological Transition reports that Spain’s total water storage dropped for a third consecutive week, reaching 82.4% of total capacity, equivalent to 46,154 hm³. This follows a weekly loss of 439 hm³ (0.8%) as rainfall remained scarce across the country.

Despite the decline, the current level is still six percentage points above the same period last year and 19.8 points above the ten‑year average. The Basque internal basins hold the highest stocks at 95.2%, and Catalonia’s internal basins are close behind at 94.7%. The Segura basin in the southeast remains the most vulnerable at 59.6%, with other basins such as the Júcar (66.5%) and the Mediterranean Andalusian basin (75%) also below 80%.

Precipitation during the last week was limited, the highest being 32.4 L/m² recorded in San Sebastián. With an unusually hot summer expected, the reservoir levels will be a key factor for water supply and agricultural demand throughout Spain.
