Spain's wild boar surge threatens Doñana birds and pig farms

In Doñana National Park, a rapid rise in wild boar numbers is leading to increased predation on ground‑nesting birds. Species such as the common crane, mallard, common redshank and imperial heron are experiencing nest losses, raising concerns among conservationists about the park's biodiversity.

A separate scientific study of 40 intensive pig farms in Aragón, Catalonia and Murcia identified wild boars as the principal indirect vector for African swine fever. Only 22.5 % of farm fences were found to be truly boar‑proof, and many entry points remained vulnerable. The researchers introduced a risk‑based biosecurity protocol that recommends stronger fencing, redesigned access controls and targeted staff training. The protocol is slated for inclusion in a forthcoming Ministry of Agriculture biosecurity guide, aiming to safeguard the Spanish pork sector and rural employment.
