Hartmut Borowski evacuated as Bordeaux wildfires force mass departure

Wildfires near Bordeaux forced the evacuation of roughly 4,000 tourists from the coastal resort of Lacanau. Among them was 69‑year‑old German retiree Hartmut Borowski from Ratingen, who had arrived with his wife and grandchildren for a six‑week holiday. The family left their caravan and, with a fully loaded trailer, travelled north to the campsite at Hourtin.

German families including Patrick Behrens and his 12‑year‑old son Oskar were also ordered to leave. Alert apps on their phones sounded, prompting a rapid departure of all campers, even those from the Netherlands. The fires, located a few kilometres from Lacanau, prompted authorities to move thousands of people, bringing the total number displaced around Bordeaux to more than 220,000. Tens of thousands of evacuees have since been allowed to return to their homes or holiday sites.
