Spain's Youth Cultural Bonus Fuels Summer Book Sales

The Spanish government’s €400 Bono Cultural Joven, aimed at 18‑year‑olds, can be spent on books and other cultural activities. The scheme has spurred increased demand during the summer discount period in bookstores, with many young people buying books for vacations.

In Seville province alone, roughly 26,000 eligible youths have been identified, and 43 % have already claimed their funds. Critics argue the bonus is a political move by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez to attract young voters, while supporters cite its potential to promote reading and cultural participation.

Bookstore owners report higher foot traffic as the discount season coincides with the bonus’s availability, highlighting the policy’s immediate impact on the domestic book market.
