Spain reading promotion programs

In early July 2026 the Spanish Ministry of Culture announced the winners of the National Reading Promotion Awards. The jury highlighted the San Clemente prize given to IES Rosalía de Castro for its three‑decade effort to foster critical thinking and reading among students, and a second prize to the television programme “Un país para leerlo” for its literary journeys across the country. Both awards aim to recognise and encourage activities that strengthen reading habits.

Later in July, the government’s €400 Bono Cultural Joven for 18‑year‑olds was reported to be driving a surge in summer book sales. Almost half of the eligible youth in Seville province had already claimed the bonus, prompting higher foot traffic in bookstores. While supporters see the scheme as a boost for cultural participation, critics view it as a political gesture ahead of elections. Together, these initiatives illustrate the Spanish state’s multi‑pronged effort to promote literacy and cultural engagement among students and young adults.
