Spanish activists participate as observers in Russian elections

Spanish activists from both the far-right and far-left participated as observers in recent Russian legislative and regional elections. Among the approximately 1,000 observers from 133 countries were Gonzalo Martín García, vice president of the far-right Democracia Nacional, and Galician-Argentine unionist Lois Pérez Leira.

While the observers aimed to certify the validity of the elections, the proceedings faced widespread criticism for high levels of manipulation. EU High Representative for Foreign Policy Kaja Kallas issued a statement describing the elections as a deepening of the erosion of democracy in Russia. She also noted the absence of representatives from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and reiterated the EU's refusal to recognize electoral results in temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.

In Nizhny Novgorod, Martín García stated his presence was intended to show the world that elections in Russia were proceeding appropriately. Local Russian media reported that Martín García was received by regional electoral commission president Margarita Andreyevna and Vice Governor Andrei Genushev.
