Spanish Association Against Cancer warns of funding cuts

The Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) is facing significant funding challenges due to reductions in European Union resources. AECC President Ramón Reyes warned that the end of the Next Generation project and an 800 million euro cut to the second phase of the Horizon Europe program starting in 2028 place Spain in a “dangerous crossroads.” Reyes noted that while Spanish public investment in scientific studies has grown by 60% since 2022, the depletion of community funds threatens the continuity of vital oncology research.

In response to these challenges, Directivas de Aragón has signed a collaboration agreement with the AECC. This partnership aims to promote healthy lifestyles, provide support for cancer patients and their families through psychological and social services, and bolster oncological research. The initiative seeks to contribute to the goal of achieving a 70% cancer survival rate by 2030.

The AECC currently allocates over 157 million euros annually to support science, funding more than 3,000 researchers. The organization is also marking the tenth anniversary of World Cancer Research Day with an international event in Brussels.
