Spanish Association Against Cancer operations and funding

The Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) is navigating financial challenges alongside efforts to expand its regional presence and support services.

AECC President Ramón Reyes has warned that the organization faces a “dangerous crossroads” due to significant funding reductions from the European Union. Specifically, the conclusion of the Next Generation project and an anticipated 800 million euro cut to the second phase of the Horizon Europe program in 2028 threaten the continuity of oncology research. To mitigate these issues, the AECC has entered a collaboration agreement with Directivas de Aragón to promote healthy lifestyles and support patients.

Concurrently, the AECC is expanding its operational reach within Spain. In Segovia, a new Provincial Council has been established to support residents through a network of professionals and volunteers, with a focus on bringing equity to rural areas. In Ciudad Real, the association is working toward reaching 10,000 members and is utilizing public events, such as the V Cancer Race and various municipal marches, to increase visibility and funding for its research and free services. These efforts align with the organization’s broader goal of achieving a 70% cancer survival rate by 2030.
