Spanish authorities coordinate response to museum robbery wave

Spain's Ministry of Culture, autonomous communities, National Police, and Civil Guard have met in Madrid to improve coordination following a wave of thefts in Spanish museums. The meeting, led by Minister Ernest Urtasun, aimed to share data regarding the “new ways of operating” used by thieves and to establish joint “best practices.”

The strategy responds to several high-profile incidents this year, including the theft of the Villena Treasure from the Villena Museum in Alicante on August 27 and a robbery at the Albacete Museum in late July. These crimes often target precious metals such as gold and silver, a trend currently affecting museums across Europe.

To combat this, the National Police's Historical Heritage Brigade has requested information from both state and regional museums to map institutions holding significant quantities of precious metals or gemstones in their deposits.
