Spanish book market sales projected to exceed 1.3 billion euros
The Spanish book market is experiencing significant growth, with sales rising 3.9% in the first half of 2026. According to data presented by GfK at the Forum Edita, total annual sales in Spain could exceed 1.3 billion euros, potentially surpassing a 4% increase for the year.
This upward trend, described by GfK's Head of Market Intelligence Ignacio López as “growth upon growth,” has been continuous since the pandemic. This phenomenon, often referred to as the “Iberian miracle,” has been mirrored in Portugal, though Portugal's growth has slowed to 1% compared to previous years. Other European markets showing growth include Italy (5%), Ireland (2%), and the United Kingdom (2%).
In terms of genre, fiction is leading the market with a 16.1% increase, while non-fiction saw a slight decline of 1.3%. Comics and graphic novels grew by 10.8%. Notably, 77% of sales came from backlist titles, while new releases accounted for 23%. Within Spain, Catalonia remains a major editorial driver, representing 21.5% of the market with a 5.2% year-on-year growth.
