Spanish book market growth

Overview

The Spanish book market is experiencing significant growth, with sales rising 3.9% in the first half of 2026. Total annual sales in Spain are projected to exceed 1.3 billion euros, potentially surpassing a 4% increase for the year.

Ignacio López, GfK’s Head of Market Intelligence, has described this continuous upward trend since the pandemic as “growth upon growth.” While the phenomenon has been mirrored in Portugal, growth there has slowed to 1%. Other European markets, including Italy, Ireland, and the United Kingdom, are also showing growth.

In terms of genre, fiction is leading the market with a 16.1% increase, while non-fiction saw a slight decline of 1.3%. Comics and graphic novels grew by 10.8%. Notably, 77% of sales came from backlist titles, while new releases accounted for 23%. Within Spain, Catalonia remains a major editorial driver, representing 21.5% of the market with a 5.2% year-on-year growth.
