Spanish cities implement climate shelters to combat heat

Municipalities in Spain are implementing various climate shelters to protect citizens from high summer temperatures. In Torrejón de Ardoz, a network of five senior centers serves approximately 3,000 users weekly. These centers provide air-conditioned spaces for rest and socialization, featuring new ‘active refuge’ initiatives such as mobility exercise circuits, reading areas, and memory exercises. The program also offers affordable refreshments and daily healthy menus to ensure proper hydration and nutrition for the elderly.

In Granada, the Centro José Guerrero has established a cultural climate shelter known as the ‘Sala de estar del Guerrero’. Located in the city center, this free, air-conditioned space allows the public to rest and hydrate using available books and games. This initiative integrates cultural resources with heat protection, providing a comfortable environment for reading and social interaction during peak heat hours.
