Spanish coastal towns launch fire prevention drives as forest fire risk spikes

In Orihuela Costa, a series of fires since 2023—including a blaze that threatened residential areas and a nearby golf course—has revived calls for dedicated forest fire brigades and better maintenance of the ramblas. Residents allege neglect by the municipal government, urging urgent action to clear vegetation and improve infrastructure to reduce fire and flood hazards.

Meanwhile, the municipality of Córdoba, together with Protección Civil, the Junta de Andalucía and the regional fire service, has started a public‑awareness campaign to prevent wildfires in the Sierra de Córdoba. Officials emphasized that "the population must take special precaution" and highlighted the need for personal autoprotection plans, vegetation clearance, and strict bans on open flames, barbecues and vehicle use in forested areas. The local fire service can deploy up to 32 personnel and eight vehicles to protect the heavily visited summer zone.
