Spanish companies increase investment in Mexico and Brazil

Spanish companies are increasing their presence in Latin America through a selective strategy focused on major markets, specifically Mexico and Brazil. According to the Bank of Spain, investment is being driven by corporate operations, concessions, acquisitions, and industrial expansion.

In the energy sector, Cox acquired Iberdrola Mexico for $4 billion, establishing Mexico as a strategic regional hub. This follows the awarding of a $304 million contract for the largest desalination plant in Latin America, also located in Mexico. Additionally, Iberdrola has strengthened its position in Brazil through a 30-year electrical transmission concession in São Paulo and moves toward full control of Neoenergia.

In the financial sector, Santander has announced an intention to launch a share exchange offer for the 10% of Santander Brasil it does not currently control. This transaction, valued at up to €1.908 billion, aims to increase the group's exposure to the Brazilian market.
