Spanish corporate investment in Latin America

Overview

Spanish companies are expanding their presence in Latin American markets, specifically Mexico and Brazil, through acquisitions, concessions, and industrial expansion. In the energy sector, Cox acquired Iberdrola Mexico for $4 billion, establishing the country as a strategic regional hub. This follows the awarding of a $304 million contract for a major desalination plant in Mexico.

To support these operations, Cox Asset México closed an $800 million hybrid capital issuance in the United States. The proceeds are intended to refinance a $733 million term loan used for the Iberdrola México acquisition. This issuance, which was oversubscribed by more than three times, marks the first time a non-financial Spanish company has conducted a dollar-denominated hybrid capital placement.

In the financial sector, Santander has announced plans to launch a share exchange offer for its remaining 10% stake in Santander Brasil, a transaction valued at up to €1.908 billion, to increase its exposure to the Brazilian market.
