Chile Justice Ministry faces backlash over sentence reductions

The Chilean Ministry of Justice is facing intense political controversy following revelations that it authorized sentence reductions for 56 individuals convicted of sexual offenses against minors. According to reports, 27 individuals were convicted of sexual abuse and 29 of rape. The decrees were issued during the administration of President José Antonio Kast.

Minister of Justice Fernando Rabat defended the decisions, stating they were based on existing legal frameworks and Supreme Court precedents regarding rights to request sentence reductions for crimes committed prior to the 2022 legal reform. The reform was intended to restrict such benefits for sexual offenders.

Further controversy emerged as it was revealed that the Ministry also signed decrees benefiting inmates at the Punta Peuco detention center, including individuals convicted of qualified kidnapping and torture. Opposition lawmakers have announced plans to interpellate Minister Rabat and are proposing legislative initiatives to prevent offenders of sexual crimes against minors from accessing such benefits.
