Spanish culinary documentaries explore chef legacies and regional gastronomy

New documentary films are exploring the intersection of cinema and gastronomy, focusing on influential Spanish chefs and the evolution of culinary culture.

Manuel García-Gil’s documentary, ‘La sombra del nogal’, examines the life of chef Toño Rodríguez in Sardas, an isolated village in the Aragonese Pyrenees. The film depicts Rodríguez’s journey of transforming a former school catering service into a Michelin-starred restaurant, highlighting the tension between professional ambition and the challenges of remote mountain life.

In another release, ‘Pedro Subijana, más allá de un bigote’, directed by Jorge Fernández Mayoral and Jesús Javier Ruiz Aquerreta, will premiere at Zinemaldia. The documentary provides an intimate portrait of Pedro Subijana, a key figure in the transformation of Basque gastronomy. The film traces his fifty-year career and his role in the ‘Nueva Cocina Vasca’ movement, presented as part of the Culinary Zinema section organized with the Basque Culinary Center.
