Spanish doctors plan indefinite strike in October over Statute Marco

A survey conducted by the Agrupación Profesional por un Estatuto Médico y Facultativo (APEMYF) involving thousands of doctors and other health professionals shows that more than 60% support an indefinite strike as the best strategy to press for a dedicated medical statute, with over 25% favouring an intermittent “in‑crescendo” approach. Seventy‑three percent of respondents prefer to begin the action in October, and 94% are willing to voluntarily give up extra duties such as on‑call shifts and special modules, a move that could significantly affect hospital organization.

The professionals reject the draft Statute Marco approved by the Council of Ministers, arguing it does not meet historic demands or recognise the profession’s uniqueness. They call for reforms covering guard duties, working hours, rest periods, pensions and remuneration. APEMYF will present the results at a meeting with the national Committee of Strike in early September and coordinate further mobilisation with unions such as Metges de Catalunya, Amyts and O’MEGA.
