Spanish energy and data center sectors warn of regulatory hurdles
Spanish energy and data center industry leaders are criticizing recent government policies and proposed regulations. Marina Serrano, president of the electricity association Aelec, has called for a structural debate on energy taxation. She argues that current fiscal policies penalize domestically produced electricity while effectively subsidizing imported fossil fuels like gas, which undermines Spain's competitive advantage in renewable energy.
Simultaneously, investors in the data center sector have expressed concern over a new Royal Decree. Begoña Villacís, executive director of Spain DC, stated that the decree introduces restrictions that act as a de facto prohibition, creating legal uncertainty. Industry representatives argue that the regulations do not align with European standards and could deter much-needed investment in infrastructure, despite the sector's relatively low energy consumption compared to other European nations.
