Spanish F-18 jet shoots down drone over Romania
A Spanish F-18 fighter jet, participating in a NATO air-policing mission, shot down a drone that entered Romanian airspace on Sunday. The incident occurred near the southeastern city of Galați, after the aircraft was detected entering the territory from Moldova.
Romanian Defence Minister Radu Miruța stated that the aircraft received authorization to intervene at 04:44 local time, with the drone being destroyed at 05:01. Fragments of the drone reportedly fell in an uninhabited area between the villages of Baleni and Cudalbi.
While Romanian authorities have not officially confirmed the drone's origin, NATO spokesperson Colonel Martin O’Donnell stated that the aircraft “appears to be Russian.” This event marks the fourth time a drone has been destroyed over Romanian airspace this year, highlighting increasing incursions along NATO’s eastern flank.
